By simplifying nutritional information, these labels can help people make better choices that fit their health goals and dietary needs.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-canada-announces-new-mandatory-front-of-package-labels-nbsp\"><strong>Canada Announces New Mandatory Front-of-Package Labels<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:60%\">\n<p>Canada\u2019s front-of-package labeling initiative is a proactive measure to empower consumers, improve public health, and encourage healthier food production and consumption. It\u2019s part of Canada&#8217;s broader <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/health-canada\/services\/food-nutrition\/healthy-eating-strategy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Healthy Eating Strategy<\/a> and aligns with international recommendations from organizations like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">World Health Organization<\/a> (WHO) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paho.org\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pan American Health Organization<\/a> (PAHO).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In July, they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/health-canada\/news\/2022\/06\/front-of-package-nutrition-labelling.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">finalized new regulations<\/a> that take effect in January 2026 that require FOP labeling for most packaged foods that are high in certain nutrients. These rules are aimed at encouraging healthier consumer choices as well as intended to incentivize manufacturers to reformulate products to avoid FOP warnings that could risk lost sales, making overall food offerings healthier.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:40%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full shadowed-block\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"320\" height=\"495\" src=\"https:\/\/syndigo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/nutrition-labelling.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-74984\" title=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-which-ingredients-will-be-included-in-canadian-front-of-package-labels-nbsp-nbsp\"><strong>Which Ingredients Will Be Included in Canadian Front-of-Package Labels?&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The three nutrients that will appear in FOP labels are <strong>saturated fat<\/strong>, <strong>sodium<\/strong>, and <strong>sugars<\/strong> that meet or exceed certain levels. Canada selected\u202fthem because their research shows that frequent consumption of foods high in these nutrients is closely linked to an increased risk of major chronic diseases.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"744\" height=\"391\" src=\"https:\/\/syndigo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/food-package.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-74985\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Foods that will require the nutrition symbol include:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Packaged foods that meet or exceed 15% of the Daily Value (DV) per serving&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Foods in small packages (\u226430g reference amount) that meet or exceed 10% DV per serving\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Prepackaged main dishes (\u2265200g reference amount) that meet or exceed 30% DV per serving&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There are some exemptions from the nutrition symbols, including:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Whole fruits and vegetables&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Plain dairy and meats&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Certain single-ingredient foods (e.g., sugar, honey, maple syrup)&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Very small packages and technical limitations&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-the-u-s-planning-nbsp\"><strong>What is the U.S. Planning?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is currently considering a front-of-package labeling system. They released a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/food\/hfp-constituent-updates\/fda-issues-proposed-rule-front-package-nutrition-labeling\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">proposed rule<\/a> in early 2025 that would complement the existing Nutrition Facts panel. It\u2019s also designed, like Canada\u2019s, to help consumers identify healthier food choices more easily.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Key Details of the FDA\u2019s Proposed Rule:<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Nutrients displayed would include saturated fat, sodium, and added sugars.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Each nutrient would be shown with a \u201cLow,\u201d \u201cMedium,\u201d or \u201cHigh\u201d label plus % Daily Value&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>There is the potential for mandatory or voluntary statement of calories.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Once this final rule is established, a compliance date of three years for large businesses and four years for small businesses will take effect.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-s-next-nbsp\"><strong>What\u2019s Next?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Canada\u2019s program is now in its implementation phase, with food manufacturers either redesigning packaging or reformulating products to stay below nutrient thresholds. Educational campaigns are also being launched to help consumers understand and use the new labels.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the U.S., the FDA\u2019s proposed rule could still be modified or delayed, depending on the outcome of the comment period and potential legal or political challenges. If adopted as currently proposed, it would mark one of the most significant changes to U.S. nutrition labeling in decades.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-global-movement-for-improving-public-health-nbsp\"><strong>A Global Movement for Improving Public Health<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Countries such as Chile, Mexico, and the UK have already implemented similar FOP labeling systems.
