{"id":67940,"date":"2025-02-05T12:26:00","date_gmt":"2025-02-05T17:26:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/syndigo.com\/?p=67940"},"modified":"2025-06-03T23:06:47","modified_gmt":"2025-06-04T03:06:47","slug":"ultra-processed-food-and-regulatory-activity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/syndigo.com\/pl\/blog\/ultra-processed-food-and-regulatory-activity\/","title":{"rendered":"Ultra-Processed Food Health Concerns Fuel Regulatory Activity\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The health effects of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) have returned to the spotlight following California Governor Gavin Newsom&#8217;s recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.ca.gov\/2025\/01\/03\/governor-newsom-issues-executive-order-to-crack-down-on-ultra-processed-foods-and-further-investigate-food-dyes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Executive Order<\/a>. The order directs several state agencies to investigate these widely consumed products and propose measures to mitigate their potential health risks. Any resulting recommendations could force manufacturers to overhaul their product formulations for the California market, one of the largest in the US.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-so-what-are-upfs-nbsp-nbsp\"><strong>So, what are UPFs?&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Ultra-processed foods are typically a formulation of ingredients that involve numerous processes that break down foods from their whole form. Generally, fats, oils, sugars, and sodium are added to these types of foods along with additives that prolong shelf life or improve palatability. UPFs can be less expensive for consumers, which has led to an uptick in the consumption of these products. They have been shown to typically be higher in saturated fats, added sugars, and salt, while lacking sufficient fiber, protein, and vitamins and minerals. According to this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health-news\/eating-ultra-processed-foods-linked-to-32-health-issues-like-heart-disease\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Healthline<\/a> article, consuming ultra-processed foods regularly increases a person\u2019s risk of health complications including cardiovascular disease, certain cancers, obesity, and type 2 diabetes. It\u2019s important to keep in mind that almost all of our food is processed to some extent, but some are more processed than others.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"594\" src=\"https:\/\/syndigo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/\u202fSyndigo-Nutrition-1024x594.webp\" alt=\" ultra-processed foods\" class=\"wp-image-67941\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-does-the-executive-order-require-nbsp\"><strong>What does the Executive Order require?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Select state agencies have been directed to provide recommendations about ultra-processed food that include:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list checkmark-list\">\n<li>Limiting the harms associated with ultra-processed foods and food ingredients that pose a health risk to individuals.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Actions to reduce the purchase of soda, candy, other ultra-processed foods and\/or foods with synthetic food dye or other additives.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"493\" src=\"https:\/\/syndigo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Wellness-solutions\u202f-1024x493.webp\" alt=\"Wellness solutions\u202f\" class=\"wp-image-67942\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-synthetic-food-dyes-and-red-no-3-nbsp-nbsp\"><strong>Synthetic Food Dyes and Red No. 3&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Also required in the Executive Order is the continued investigation into the adverse health impacts of synthetic food dyes. California passed the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2023\/10\/10\/1204839281\/california-ban-food-additives-red-dye-3-propylparaben-candy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">California Food Safety Act<\/a> in 2024 that prohibits certain food additives from being sold, manufactured, or distributed in the state, including Red No. 3. And in a recent action, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a nationwide ban on using Red No. 3 in food and drinks starting in January 2027. This means US manufacturers must modify their product formulations and remove it from their labels. The rule also applies to foods imported into the US. It\u2019s already banned in food use in the European Union, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"575\" src=\"https:\/\/syndigo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Wellness-1024x575.webp\" alt=\"wellness\" class=\"wp-image-67943\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-future-of-food-additives-regulation-nbsp\"><strong>The Future of Food Additives Regulation<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Depending on the final recommendations requested in the Executive Order, food and drink manufacturers may need to alter their products to comply with new standards. Changes will not only impact California, the largest state by population in the country, but likely the entire country. Historically, businesses tend to adjust their products to meet California\u2019s stricter regulatory standards and make these available across the country, rather than change a product for just one state, which is inefficient and costly for manufacturers. For consumers, impacts may be seen in grocery stores and at the point of sale, depending on the proposed ways to help reduce purchases of these products.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With mounting evidence linking ultra-processed foods to children\u2019s health issues, obesity, and other health concerns, regulatory bodies are increasingly scrutinizing the use of additives in ultra-processed foods.
