PAUL Tech’s AI Technology Turns Buildings Green with Syndigo MDM

PAUL Tech

As an energy innovator, PAUL Tech AG (PAUL) develops advanced technologies and solutions that not only reduce CO₂ emissions but also increase the value of properties across diverse sectors. Their ambitious mission is to lower energy consumption and harmful carbon emissions to help properties achieve CO₂ neutrality simply, quickly, and affordably. By digitalizing central building systems with intelligent hardware and harnessing the power of artificial intelligence to optimize and automate volume flows, PAUL delivers remarkable energy and CO₂ savings. Their expertise spans a wide range of asset classes, from care facilities, hotels, and offices to residential buildings, retail spaces, and even maritime applications such as ships across Europe, Asia, and the US.

PAUL Tech AG

During the early business phase, PAUL recognized the importance of implementing a comprehensive data management strategy early in its journey to support expected growth. Their technology relies on capturing and processing millions of data points, necessitating a robust infrastructure. To maintain high data quality standards and ensure seamless integration across their internal systems, PAUL determined that adopting a Master Data Management (MDM) solution was crucial for their operations. This foresight in data strategy has positioned them to efficiently manage their complex data requirements.

They have realized several benefits from using Syndigo MDM, including:

  • Scalability for global data management growth.
  • Easy expansion of the master data model to reflect changing business needs.
  • Significant cost savings in data maintenance.
  • Automation for improved data accuracy.
  • Significantly more efficient processes based on contextual data.

With our product, we make buildings energy-efficient and thus ESG-compliant. The focus of our business model is driven by sustainability. We want to make a decisive contribution to ensuring that our customers can operate buildings in a CO₂-neutral manner.

Building a Data Management Foundation

When PAUL set out to revolutionize energy efficiency for the real estate industry, they encountered a significant data management challenge. Their business model required the ability to collect, process, and derive value from vast amounts of data across numerous real estate properties worldwide. This was not merely about storing information but creating a dynamic, scalable system that could transform raw data into actionable insights, support rapid global expansion, and facilitate a fully digital customer experience. To achieve this, they needed an MDM system capable of addressing critical challenges, including:

  • Scalability for Global Expansion: From the outset, PAUL had ambitious growth plans. They required a system that could scale from handling data for 100 customers to potentially thousands across multiple countries.
  • Data Volume and Variety: They faced the challenge of handling around 1.7 trillion measurements per year of data from diverse sources that added up to millions of data points. This includes readings from sensors and actuators in properties across multiple countries, ranging from residential units to large commercial buildings and even cruise ships.
  • Supporting E-commerce Processes: Their vision included a full e-commerce process where the first touchpoint is digital and the implementation, meaning the service provision, is also digital. The data management system had to support this end-to-end digital approach.
Enhanced Content
  • Granular Device Tracking: The system needed to be able to track data at an individual device level. Each sensor, actuator, and piece of equipment required a unique identifier and association with specific properties and customers.
  • Data Contextualization: Raw measurement data alone wasn’t sufficient. They sought to link this data with property information to make it truly valuable. Only through the contextualization of the measurement data with the customer building information does it become valuable.
  • Data Quality and Enrichment: Initial data presented opportunities for improvement in completeness and accuracy. They wanted an MDM to support data verification, enrichment, and cleaning processes.
  • Real-time Data Access: Various teams, from sales to maintenance, necessitated immediate access to up-to-date information about customers and their properties. Real-time alerting in the event of faults was also a challenge.
  • Compliance & Regulations: Maintaining compliance with constantly changing global regulations was essential to record and track.

These challenges required a scalable and flexible MDM solution that could support its ambitious business operations.

PAUL’s AI-Innovation for Building Sustainability

PAUL’s AI-driven solution addresses the inefficiencies of heating systems by capturing and reusing energy that would otherwise be lost during transport, significantly enhancing building energy efficiency. The most crucial use of their artificial intelligence is the control of their systems. For example, the measurements they take result in actions such as opening and closing valves, turning heaters on and off, and more. While these tasks can be performed manually or with control algorithms, they specifically use artificial intelligence to manage them.

My team is probably tired of hearing me say that we need to improve our master data quality, but data quality is essential. Artificial intelligence doesn’t work without well-contextualized data. The master data has to be perfect, and automation is essential to reach that goal.

Syndigo MDM

Growing with Syndigo MDM

PAUL’s vision was clear from the very beginning: the entire process, from the first digital touchpoint to the final implementation, had to be supported by accurate and timely data. Syndigo’s cloud-native MDM met these requirements and more with its scalability and adaptability. With support from Syndigo’s partner Advellence, PAUL’s unique MDM needs were customized to align with their specific business and operational goals. Their data management operations now benefit from these advantages:

Complex Data Management at Scale

The system efficiently handles millions of data points recorded from a wide array of sensors and actuators in their customers’ properties. These are connected with the master data to transform them into actionable insights. Their customers typically own numerous properties—sometimes hundreds or even thousands of residential units—that all need to be accurately classified and recorded. The Syndigo system enables them to manage this complex web of data efficiently.

Improved Customer Maintenance Operations

The MDM system also plays a vital role internally, supporting not only sales but also maintenance operations. Their Control Board can access property data in real-time, allowing immediate response to issues like heating system failures or valve malfunctions. This seamless integration across various systems—from CRM to ERP—highlights Syndigo’s versatility and importance as the backbone of its operations.

Syndigo Master Data

To understand which property a particular measured value belongs to and where it was recorded, the data has to be contextualized with the master data from the MDM system. This key functionality is indispensable for our operations and ultimately influenced our selection of Syndigo MDM.

Superior Data Quality for Field Services and Sales Teams

For their field service and direct sales teams, the MDM system is invaluable. While the initial data arrived in various formats, the system ensured comprehensive data processing, qualification, and enrichment, starting from on-site inspections. Technicians recorded precise data using a custom app, feeding it directly into Syndigo. This enriched data is then accessible to sales representatives, providing detailed insights into each property, including the number of residential units, insulation details, and heating installations.

Unmatched Data Model Flexibility

PAUL values the flexibility of Syndigo’s master data model. For example, when they needed to add heat pumps to their data model they were able to complete it within a week, demonstrating the system’s flexibility and responsiveness.

We use Syndigo MDM as a complete digital twin of our customers. With the measured values in it, we know our customers better today than the customers know themselves.

A Winning Combination: Syndigo and Advellence

Syndigo and Advellence worked closely with PAUL on strategy and implementation. The synergy between Syndigo’s MDM capabilities and the Digital Asset Management system, Sharedien, provided the ideal solution. The integration with Sharedien allows PAUL to efficiently stream, store, search, manage, and organize vast amounts of digital assets like images, videos, and documents which can be easily shared with employees and customers. This system is fully scalable and integrates seamlessly across multiple internal platforms, including Syndigo MDM. As a Syndigo partner, Advellence’s expertise in data and process management played a significant role in the success of the project.

The collaboration with Syndigo and Advellence helped us confidently meet our complex data requirements so we could quickly respond to new data challenges.
